Once in the shadow of his iconic father, Brandon Cronenberg takes a massive step on his own twisted path with Possessor — a wholly unique nightmare, a provocative fusion of flesh and mind, and the tech that binds it all together.

Andrea Riseborough and Christopher Abbott lead a stacked cast, superb as souls fused by a corporate hit gone wrong. The two lend considerable gravitas to a deadly internal battle — a queasy kaleidoscope of lost will, identity, sex and violence.

And violent it is. Cronenberg goes all in with his vision, proving himself just as uncompromising as his old man, flooding the screen with a glut of morphed bodies, swapped organs, and, if you’re watching the uncut version (and you really should), the most brutal use of a fire poker you’ll ever see on film.

But it’s much more than just a cheap gory thrill. Possessor is a smart concept executed to perfection by a filmmaker in complete control of his craft. The apple, as they say, doesn’t fall far from the tree.
