Film Review — Piggy (2022)
¡Ay, caramba! ★★★★☆
No one likes Sara. Tormented relentlessly by the teens in her small Spanish town, scolded by her exasperated mother and mostly ignored by her butcher father. Even the 4:3 aspect ratio appears to have it in for the young senorita.
Written and directed by Carlota Pereda as an expansion on her original short of the same name, Piggy is a sharp combination of slasher horror and social commentary that revels in its playful fusion.
Laura Galán is excellent in the lead role, perfectly capturing the conflicting emotions of a young woman who has been driven to breaking point. A truly sympathetic character whose actions are clearly questionable but completely understandable.
Piggy doesn’t quite go as expected. Those watching based on the poster and nothing else will either love it or hate it. Personally, I found myself pleasantly surprised by the film’s subversive nature, not to mention its deliciously dark sense of humour.
