Film Review — Malignant
Your head will collapse.
★☆☆☆☆
On more than one occasion whilst watching, I expected a moment where an off-screen director would shout “cut!”, a sudden snap back to reality and a twist that would reasonably explain the jaw-dropping madness that is James Wan’s Malignant. It never came.
I’m still not sure where to start with this. It’s one of the barmiest films I’ve ever seen. But not in a good way. Wan and screenwriter Akela Cooper have made a film so absurd, so mind-numbingly stupid that its very existence could actually destabilise the fabric of our reality.
It’s no surprise Malignant is as popular as it is. It’s a film purpose-built for our era of TikTok reactions and eggs tweeting, “Bro, you’ve got to see this!”. But much like the kid at school that would do anything for attention, I’m not laughing with it, but rather at it.
